Handmade mezzotint prints, released in small editions

Join the list to be the first to know when new art is added to my shop, including each new mezzotint release. There's no obligation to buy.

Deep blacks. Soft light. Creating a mezzotint is a process of immersion. Losing yourself in the subject. Returning to an image again and again. Submerging your mind in the lights and the dark...

Each of my mezzotint prints is hand-printed on a Gunning etching press at the Gisborne Printmakers studio, and released in a small edition. Join the list for early access: subscribers are told the drop date and sent the link first.

Current release: "kōwhai pods"

"kōwhai pods" is my first mezzotint print available to purchase. It's an edition of 15, and just five will be released online in November. I'm working on a second mezzotint now, and the list will have the opportunity to purchase it first.

What is "kōwhai pods"?

"kōwhai pods" is a hand-pulled mezzotint print of kōwhai seed pods, made by me on a printmaking press in Gisborne. It is an edition of 15, signed and numbered. Every print is inked and pulled by hand, so small differences between prints are part of the work.

Unframed print, 10cm x 14cm plate on A4, printed on Fabriano Tiepolo 290 gsm 100% cotton paper.

How many "kōwhai pods" prints are available?

"kōwhai pods" is an edition of 15, and two prints are already sold. Five will be available online in November, and a small number will be available to purchase at She Shed Tour Gisborne on Sunday 15 November. When they are gone, I'll let the list know whether any more will follow.

Each print will be individually photographed and added to the shop, so you know exactly what the print you choose looks like.

How much does "kōwhai pods" cost?

The "kōwhai pods" mezzotint print costs $140 unframed, including postage within New Zealand. Each print is carefully packaged and posted within three working days of receiving your order, and will arrive in time for Christmas if you order by Friday 11 December.

What is a mezzotint print?

A mezzotint is a handmade print made from a copper plate that is roughened or "rocked" all over, so it holds ink and prints a deep, velvety black. The image is revealed by smoothing or "scraping" parts of the plate so they hold less ink, creating softer tones and light.

It is slow work, involving many test prints before the perfect balance of light and dark is reached. As the plate is pressed, the image loses definition. This means the edition is only ever small, making mezzotint original prints highly sought after.

I learned mezzotint in January 2026 at Print Council NZ Summer School on a course taught by Nan Mulder, an internationally recognised mezzotint printmaker. I'm eternally grateful to Nan for introducing me to and teaching me such a magical printmaking technique.

How do I get early access to a new mezzotint release?

To get early access to a new mezzotint release, join the list on this page. Subscribers are told the release date and sent the link to buy first, ahead of the public release, which gives you the best chance of a print from such a small edition.

What if I miss out?

If you miss out on a release, join the list and I'll let you know as soon as the next mezzotint is ready. In the meantime I'll be adding other work to my shop, and being on the list means you'll always be first to know when new work is added.
